South African Cultures

In the entire African continent, South Africa is perhaps the most prominent of all and then comes Egypt or any other country. South Africa, today, is marking itself on the map in several ways like trade and sports. South Africa has been colonized by the Dutch, an the English and the French. So, you find all kinds of influences in the people and the country.

South Africa is a multicultural and multi racial society. So, never judge any person by the skin color because they may belong to different ethnicity.

There are several major cultures and smaller ethnic groups in South Africa. It is very complex and difficult to understand these races and cultures. There is a lot of suppression of the smaller traditional groups, and some cultures clearly dominate the others. Besides the oppression, these people who belong to various cultures function differently. Their food habits, the way they celebrate the marriages, or talk is completely different from each other.

Also, one tradition does not mix with the other and even marriages are not allowed in inter racial groups. In general, most of the customs accept dowry as a part of the marriage deal. Also, sacrificing animals is seen as a symbol of wealth.

However, the age old tradition of the indigenous people that is seen even today is the only way to connect to a lost tradition. Some people have managed to maintain these traditions and continue them. Unfortunately, some of the oldest traditions of Africa have been wiped out because people stopped following them.
