The western part of Africa includes the Maghreb, Algeria, Tunisia and Western Saharan region. This portion occupies approximately one fifth of the region of Africa. In Western Africa, Islam is the main religion and extends all the way to the far west. As far as religious structures are present, the Great Mosque of Djenne was built by the Muslims.
Along the coast, Christianity is a more popular religion; for example in places like Nigeria, Ghana and Cote d' Ivoire. Even indigenous people have converted into these religions, but there are a very few indigenous tribes left who still follow and practice their age-old traditions and cultural practices.
The Western African people are also connected with the Sub Saharan tribes, and the music and the oral traditions are very similar to each other. The Western African society is very traditional and eclectic. For example, they play a traditional game called the oware. And, soccer is also a popular game at the same time. Some of the popular music traditions observed in western African people are Mbalax, Highlife and Afrobeats. They all wear a typical dress called the Boubou. The djembe drum is one of the most popular musical equipment that symbolifies the Western African culture. The Mandinka people played the drums regularly. They celebrated frequently and the drums were an integral part of their culture. The Kora is also one of the musical instruments and it is very much like a harp that has 21 strings. The Western African traditional people are also popular for weaving silks and the Kente cloth.
