The United States culture is a combination of several cultures from across the world. Though heavily influenced by Europe, the United States has been through a mammoth transformation. There was always a conflict between the British influenced ideals and the domestic American ones.
So, the American society and culture can be viewed with the help of two main theories -- the melting pot theory, and the salad bowl theory. One theory explains how culture got influenced by the domestic culture existent and how the immigrants blended with the Native American society. Another theory views how the Americans adapted to the culture and traditions of the immigrants.
The American population in general is a mixture of immigrants from various countries like Greece, Britain, France, Italy, Africa, China and Korea mainly. There were fewer numbers of immigrants from Japan, Russia and India as well. These people settled in different parts of the US. However, the majority of the immigrants were from Africa. The black population was mainly brought into the United States as slaves. Eventually the Africans brought in a lot of their traditions and started celebrating them in the United States. They were spread out in almost all the parts of the United States.
The African culture has had a major influence ever since on all the aspects of the American culture including clothing, music, food and a lot more. At the same time the Africans adapted to the English language, and ended up forgetting their own dialects. That is the salad bowl theory, and perhaps this theory fits in best to explain the cultural scenario prevalent in present-day United States.
