Witchcraft In Native American Culture

Native American culture and tradition is an age old and an ancient culture that existed in America for centuries. However, within the Native American tradition, people followed several anti social practices like witchcraft, for example.

The Native American witchcraft has been associated with the natives of the region. Witchcraft was used in several ways by these people and in fact it was held sacred as it was entangled with many religious beliefs. The witchcraft symbols were mainly adapted from the nature. The Native American tradition believed in spirits and after life.

Before the colonists came to the United States, the Native Americans spread all over the country. At that time, the United States demographics did not even exist and there were no borders. These tribes were free to roam to any part of the North American continent literally.

The Native American witchcraft mainly used amulets and charms with animal symbols for example. Also, people who practiced the witchcraft wore specific masks and robes. They had their own tattoos and markings which helped to identify them. The amulets were called totems. However, witchcraft was mainly used for protection and good things only. It was seldom used for any harm. They carved the totems themselves using wood, feathers or bones of dead animals.

Witchcraft was also used to cure ailments in people. The witches had a very deep faith in the spirits and they chanted hymns to practice their beliefs. The shamans were usually women, and during some epidemic or major illnesses, they conducted ritual practices using witchcraft.
