Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, never fails to mesmerize people, and it is perhaps one of the oldest followers of cultural traditions in the world. Japan has had a rich tradition of history and culture of thousands of years. Today's Japan may be heavily influenced by the American culture, but it was not so a century back. Also, no one can say how old the traditions of Japan were as they are too intricate and complex to understand. There have been several ancient cultures in Japan.
The Jomon culture actually refers to the art of pottery that was practiced during its period. It has distinct lines and its own designs and shapes through which it is identified. The Jomon pottery refers to the Neolithic age when pottery was just found perhaps. People used polished tools and also practiced agriculture and cattle rearing activities. Even weaving and study of architecture was prevalent during these times. The Jomon culture is Mesolithic, and during this time people mainly depended on hunting and fishing.
The Yayoi culture was present in the Kyushu region even when Jomon culture was still present. It was practiced in the northern islands of Japan. During this culture's time, the pottery was fired and the pottery wheel was being used to give items more definite shapes. They also used metal objects and cultivated rice and other edible produce. These people also might have brought the rice cultivation from China into Japan.
There are nearly four to five more cultures that were identified to be originally Japanese. These cultures existed long before the dynasties ruled.
