Almost every country in the world has a dance culture and some are traditional others are more modern. There are hundreds of traditional dancing styles and modern dances that are unique to some countries because they originated there.
When it comes to Japan, one of their traditional dances is called the Bon Odori. This dance is widely practiced during the Bon festival, which is held in summer in most districts of Japan.
The Bon festival is held in the month of August of each year. It goes on for a week. During this festival all the relatives of a family gather together, and they dance. It is done to hold a memorial service for their dead ancestors. This is also an ancient Chinese or Buddhist tradition. However, the dance is very unique to Japan just like Sumo wrestling.
This is the only time you will find the Japanese people rather cheerful and shedding their reserved behavior. This dance is now being taught to youngsters as an effort to keep the tradition alive.
Singing and dancing is a very integral part of Japanese culture. Dance is also performed during weddings and other important occasions. The dance and its variation depend on the community and their religion. Some Japanese are followers of Buddhism, others follow Christianity. There are some minority religions as well in Japan. So the festivals, dance and culture depends on what type of religion people follow. Most of the dances have a common form that comes from the same tradition. Japanese dance is a slow and conformed dance.
