Cultures Of Women In The Middle East

Women in the Middle East lead a very restricted lifestyle. They do not have freedom or even the right to vote. Violence against women is very high in this region. Sexual violence and exploitation of women in the Middle East has been a very big problem for the United Nations, and there is no easy way to sort it out actually. The culture and religious practices of the Middle East actually allow such behavior towards women.

For example, if a woman has an extra marital affair and it was discovered, then she would be stripped naked and flogged in front of everyone publicly. Sometimes the woman is even stoned to death. The same punishment is extended if a woman lies or cheats anyone. Married women were not allowed to meet their friends or family. They were not even allowed outdoors and have no concept of society that includes women. Only men are allowed to meet in public places and talk to each other. Women should never be found outdoors. Also, women had to follow strict veil systems and rules.

One of the UN report discovered a chilling fact that several men often killed their wives if they were discovered having committed adultery. The society agreed with this harsh punishment and felt the women deserved it. From Syria to Saudi Arabia this is a common problem. While there are several social organizations working for the betterment of women in these parts, it is still a very long shot. Also, some countries like Kuwait have given women suffrage and they can now stand for elections, it will be a long time before all countries in the Middle East follow suit.
