The Middle Eastern culture is mainly governed by Islam and Muslim traditions. Islam is the predominant religion of the region. The society in the region is an extremely conservative society which adheres to the principles of Islam word for word. People who do not follow the rituals to the correct measure are punished very badly.
Many Middle Eastern countries do not treat women as equal to men. There is no similarity between the Western culture and the Islamic culture of the Middle East. Actually you will get a rude shock observing several of their traditions. However, when you read about the traditions of other cultures, it is best to have an open mind and be detached.
In the Islamic culture, everyone is closely knit, including grandparents and small children. Family is important, and respect increases according to the hierarchy. Blood ties are extremely important in the Middle East and even a distant relative is expected to go out of the way to help out a relative in distress. Divorce is not very common in such a society. A man is allowed to marry more than one time if his wife agrees. However, a woman cannot. A woman has to be divorced first to be able to marry again. However, this kind of a scenario does not take place.
Women are not allowed to go outside without their veil. They can severely punished by the religious police if they are found walking on the streets without cover and attire. Also, in the Islamic tradition, a woman does not meet the person she is going to marry until the day of marriage. And, a woman can be seen in company of men in public only if they are her brothers, father or husband.
