Russian Culture And Custom

Russia is a conglomeration of cultural practices and customs. There are more than 100 minor languages in Russia that are spoken even today. However, Russian is also spoken widely along with these languages. In Russia, families are very close knit. The family includes everyone from immediate family members to extended families and cousins.

It is very common to find two or three generations living together or in the same area in Russia. In general, individual families in Russia are small with one or two children. Also, women go outside to work and so, the grandparents, aunts and uncles end up taking care of the children. Russians take great pride in their families and their country. Their country's honor and also family's honor means everything to them.

All decisions in a family are made by the head of the family, invariably the oldest male, and everyone adheres to the decision. Also, in Russia everybody is interested in others' business, and privacy is not considered with high regard. When Russians meet strangers they give a firm handshake and seem very confident to be meeting them. When women meet for the first time they kiss each others' cheeks three times starting with the left cheek first.

Even the naming system in Russia is very unique which if followed even today. Along with it, people exchange gifts and pleasantries on all important occasions throughout the year. Agriculture was the main source of food and occupation for Russians for a very long time. The land was common to everyone.
