Russian traditions always involve their families and their friends first. So, almost all forms of celebrations will include friends and family gathered together under one roof. Even the smallest of the reason could call for a big celebration in Russian culture.
Birthdays and other important days are always a big affair for people here. Also drinking is a very important part of their culture. Russians will fancy wine and other kinds of alcohol like vodka almost in every kind of celebration. They are known to be heavy drinkers. Also, when visitors refuse to drink when offered, it is considered as a mark of disrespect to the host.
Russian family culture and customs come across as very loud and raucous to onlookers. They laugh loud and also their sense of humor is all about poking jokes about someone else. All these are accepted and taken well by family members even though they are at the receiving end of the jokes.
Russians are society animals, and they do not care much for privacy. If there is a very personal matter about you, then everyone in the immediate community knows about it and people will keep questioning you about the status of your problem. All these are a part and parcel of Russian life. People who are visiting Russia for the first time may find it weird to be greeted with almost a bone crushing handshake. But, Russians are quite friendly, and they will go all the way to help you with directions and things like that.
